Giant prehistoric tusks Researchers in northern Greece
Researchers in northern Greece have found two massive tusks of a prehistoric mastodon that roamed Europe more than 2 million years ago -- tusks that could be the largest of their kind ever found.
The remains of the mastodon, which was similar to the woolly mammoth but had straighter tusks as well as different teeth and eating habits, were found in an area about 250 miles north of Athens. One of the tusks measured 16-feet-4-inches long and the other was more than 15 feet long, the research team said. They were found with the animal's upper and lower jaws -- still bearing teeth -- and leg bones, said Evangelia Tsoukala, an assistant professor of geology at the University of Thessaloniki, who led the team that excavated the site.
The tusks were discovered in October by an excavation machine operator working at a sand quarry, but it took months for the scientific investigation to be organized.

Octopus helps unearth 900-year-old ancient pottery
South Korean archaeologists have discovered a sunken vessel packed with ancient pottery, in an exploration prompted by an octopus which attached its suckers to a plate.
The 12th-century wooden vessel was found buried in mud flats off Taean, southwest of Seoul, the National Maritime Museum said.
More than 2,000 pieces of 12th-century bowls, plates and other types of pottery were heaped inside the 7.7 meter (25-foot) vessel, it said.
The exploration began in early June after shards of celadon pieces were found attached to the suckers of several webfoot octopuses which a fisherman had netted.
The museum has since retrieved about 540 pieces, which were scattered around the vessel. Several shipwrecks filled with relics including ancient pottery have been found along the west coast, where many kilns were established in the Koryo era.

Angry circus elephant kills Thai man
Police in eastern Thailand say an angry circus elephant grabbed a 30-year-old air conditioner repairman, Surat Kaenthip, who had provoked him and stomped on him until he was fatally injured.
The six-year-old elephant was resting in an open field in Rayong province, 90 miles east of Bangkok when the man hit him, said police Lieutenant Colonel Thanit Saeniwong na Ayuddhaya.
"The elephant then grabbed the man's body with his trunk and hurled him on to the ground before stomping on his body," he said.
Rescuers were deterred from helping Surat because the elephant ran toward them in a threatening manner, Thanit said. They eventually succeeded in taking Surat away but he later died in hospital from a cracked skull.
Onlookers then managed to temporarily placate the elephant by feeding him bunches of bananas, but he turned angry again, and dented a pickup truck parked nearby before his trainer - who had been away - returned and managed to calm him down.

American brothers gored on the horns of the same bull
A bull that broke from the pack seriously gored two American brothers, catching one on each of its horns during the running of the bulls festival in Pamplona, where both were recovering Friday in the hospital.
Lawrence and Michael Lenahan were gored simultaneously by the bull, which also injured 11 other people Thursday. It was the worst day for injuries in the nine-day festival.
"I started yelling at my brother to show him I was bleeding everywhere but he showed me he was bleeding everywhere," said Lawrence Lenahan, a 26-year-old Air Force captain from Hermosa Beach, Calif., in a telephone interview from his hospital bed.
He was gored in the buttocks, while Michael Lenahan, 23, of Philadelphia, was injured in his leg and was recovering well from surgery at the same hospital.
The computer program finds how you feel
New facial analysis software has been developed that claims to be able to recognize a person's mood in an instant. It could mean the start of personalised advertising campaigns that can tell how you feel by simply looking at your face.
The 'rapid facial analysis' technology is being developed by researchers at the German Fraunhofer Institute. It uses highly complex software to find a human face in an image, work our whether the face is male or female, and then analyse their expressions.
"The special feature of our facial analysis software is that it operates in real time," says Dr. Christian Küblbeck, project manager at the IIS.
The most important facial characteristics used by the system are the contours of the face, the eyes, the eyebrows and the nose.
The system first has to go through a training phase in which it is presented with huge quantities of data containing images of faces.
The computer compares 30,000 facial characteristics with the information that it has previously learned. "On a standard PC, the calculations are carried out so quickly that mood changes can be tracked live," explains Küblbeck.
The software package is not only of interest to advertising psychologists; there are numerous potential applications for the system.
The developers say that it can be used to test the user-friendliness of computer software programs.
The system monitors the facial expressions of the user in order to determine which aspects of the program arouse a particularly strong reaction.
The system could also be used to check the levels of concentration of car drivers.
