Wooden Sculptures

Wooden Sculptures
Wooden Sculptures by Michael Rea

If you have ever had the privilege of viewing a work by artist Mike Rea, chances are you were instantly captivated by his amazing geek-inspired wood sculptures.

Michael masters the art of crafting wood into sculptures of objects that are normally symbolized with materials such as metal, glass or plastic. Wood undergoes renaissance on passing through the hands of the characteristic mentor, who reads ’sublime is unattainable,’ yet very subtly nullifies the notion. The extremely detailed woodwork, ranging from sculptures of things used in space, in war, under the water or to play some melodious music, it’s all a result of his memory, ‘thought’ as I put it above.

Lego Crawler

Lego Crawler Town

I've played with my fair share of LEGOs, but I never actually envied the little guys until I saw Dave DeGobbi's Crawler Town, a work as impressively conceived as it is constructed. I'd forfeit bendable elbows to live in it.

It sort of reminds me of those old books on a single building—Castles or Pyramids or what have you—where you could look at the huge, detailed illustrations and imagine dozens of little stories unfolding in every corner.

created by Dave DeGobbi. As it should, Crawler Town has its own little backstory:Crawler town roams the barren wastes of a post steam-punk world after cataclysmic climate change do to excessive coal use. Several such cities exist but Crawler town is the most popular due to the Aero 500 hydrogen fuel cell Air races that are held. Many people travel the wastes to Crawler town for vacation and to enjoy rare luxuries like Pizza, fresh vegetables and Beer. Travelling the wastes in search of minerals and aquifers ( vital for survival) the mobility of the city keeps it away from the vicious sand storms of the wastes.

A drawing a little girl drew of her mother

A drawing a little girl drew of her mother that makes it look like she's an exotic dancer on a stripper pole.

Here's the message the teacher received the next day:

Dear Mrs. Jones, I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an exotic dancer. I work at Home Depot and I told my daughter how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit. I told her we sold out every single shovel we had, and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it. Her picture doesn't show me dancing around a pole. It's supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home Depot. From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in.

Breathtaking Diver Breaks World Record

Freediving World Record Peter Colat Manages Almost 20 Minutes Under Water In Switzerland

A World Record For Holding Breath Broken Swiss diver has taken more than a few people's breath away after he survived under water without breathing apparatus for almost 20 minutes.

Peter Colat broke all previous records by holding his breath for an impressive 19 minutes and 21 seconds as he floated inside a water tank.

The thirty-eight-year-old is an avid aficionado of freediving, an extreme sport where the aim is to stay under water, unaided by snorkels or oxygen tanks, for as long as possible.

Colat said the first 12 minutes were "no problem", though he found the last stretch of his record attempt much more challenging.

Colat plunged into a water tank at an event in St Gallen, Switzerland.

Before the attempt, he was allowed to breathe pure oxygen for 10 minutes to help him endure the physical effects of the dive.

He beat the previous record, held by Italian Nicola Putignano, by 19 seconds.

Peter Atkey, of the Diving Diseases Research Centre, was stunned by the record-beating time.

"It's an astonishing amount of time," he said.

And talking about the fact that freedivers can drown after eight minutes without oxygen, he added: "It's clear that some people can put up with it a lot more.

"You teach your body to go without breathing for longer periods of time through progressive depth dives.

"(Freedivers) have some sort of physical predilection to it."

That has not stopped freediving from earning a reputation as one of the most dangerous extreme sports.

Only last week, coast guard officials recovered the body of a freediver who was attacked by a shark while diving off the coast of Guam.

In 2007, a former French freediving champion died after he passed out while training in the Mediterranean.

A rapid ascent rope, designed to save his life in such an event, became snagged under water and by the time he reached the surface rescue workers were unable to resuscitate him.

Important Questions to Ask Your Doctor

this drug been on the market

When your doctor prescribes a drug, ask her or him the right questions and don’t leave before you have the answers.

* How long has this drug been on the market?

As we have seen, many of the problems of drugs and their side effects are with the newer drugs that have been recently licensed, and that are being aggressively marketed by the drug company’s salesmen. If your doctor takes you off a particular drug, and tries another drug that he says will work better, be very suspicious. You may be an unwitting guinea pig in a drugs trial.

* Is drug therapy really needed for this problem?

Many conditions, such as premenstrual tension or depression after bereavement, can be treated by diet or the loving attention of friends and relatives. A new study finds that people suffering from major depression can be helped just as well by help in facing up to and solving their problems as by taking antidepressants. Unless you can be persuaded that your condition will definitely worsen, why introduce a substance that could also introduce a whole new set of problems?

*What will happen if I don’t take the drug?

*What is this drug supposed to do for me? How will it do that? How are you going to monitor the use of the drug? Do your instructions differ for those of the data sheet?

*What sorts of drugs or substances (including non-prescription drugs, food or alcohol) should I avoid when taking this drug?

*With what other drugs does this drug dangerously react?

Although one drug used alone might carry a small risk, when combined with another drug, that risk can be multiplied several times over, as can the strength of the toxicity.

*What are the known side effects of this drug, as reported by the manufacturer?

*What are the latest reports in the medical literature about this drug’s side effects?

Magazines like The Lancet publish new studies… Most large science libraries will have the American Physician’s Desk Reference or the Data Sheet Compendium on the shelf. The British Library’s medical section holds both. Another possibility is to do a Medline Search, a computerised version of the Cumulated Index Medicus, a summary of most scientific studies performed on most treatments. If your library doesn’t have Medline, they probably have the Index Medicus itself, an unwieldy volume that will fill most of a shelf.
