bendy bicycle

Incredible British young designer has invented a revolutionary folding bicycle that will stop thieves in their tracks

Kevin Scott, 21, designed the space-age bike that wraps around a lamp post so it can be locked-up safely - without the need for a lock or chain.

The De Montfort University graduate used a ratchet system built into the frame of the bike to allow it to wrap around a pole, enabling the lock to be wrapped through both wheels and the frame.

Securing all the bike's components within the lock was his aim in creating the new bike. It also allows the bike to be stored in small spaces.

The frame can be ratcheted tight to allow the bike to be ridden like a normal bike, but it can be quickly loosened to allow the frame to be bent back on itself.

As such, finding a spot to lock it up on London's busy streets is a cinch - you simply wrap it around the nearest lamppost.

Mr Scott's creation is currently on show at the Young Designers 2 show in Islington, north London.

He is hoping that his unusual cycle will catch the eye of a bike loving backer who will enable him to develop it further.

More than 52 bikes are stolen in London every day, according to official figures.

A total of 23,748 bikes were reported stolen in London in 2009-10 — up 27.8 per cent on the previous financial year — but police believe that the true figure could be double that.

Experts recommend that users should spend around 10 per cent of their bike's value on a decent lock - ideally two - and always lock it to a solid object through the frame.

Titanoboa - The Largest Snake

Titanoboa meaning "titanic boa," is a genus of snake that lived approximately 60 to 58 million years ago, in the Paleocene epoch.a 10-million-year period immediately following the dinosaur extinction event. The only known species is the Titanoboa cerrejonensis, the largest snake ever discovered, which supplanted the previous record holder, Gigantophis.

By comparing the sizes and shapes of its fossilized vertebrae to those of extant snakes, researchers estimated that the T. cerrejonensis reached a maximum length of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft), weighed about 1,135 kg (2,500 lb), and measured about 1 m (3 ft) in diameter at the thickest part of the body.

The largest eight of the 28 T. cerrejonensis snakes found were between 12 and 15 m (40 and 50 ft) in length. In comparison, the largest extant snakes are the Python reticulatus, which measures up to 8.7 metres (29 ft) long, and the anaconda, which measures up to 5.21 metres (17 ft) long and is considered the heaviest snake on Earth. At the other end of the scale, the smallest extant snake is Leptotyphlops carlae with a length of about 10 centimetres (4 in).

In 2009, the fossils of 28 individual T. cerrejonensis were announced to have been found from the Cerrejón Formation in the coal mines of Cerrejón in La Guajira, Colombia. Prior to this discovery, few fossils of Paleocene-epoch vertebrates had been found in ancient tropical environments of South America. The snake was discovered on an expedition by a team of international scientists led by Jonathan Bloch, a University of Florida vertebrate paleontologist, and Carlos Jaramillo, a paleobotanist from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama.

Because snakes are ectothermic, the discovery implies that the tropics, the creature's habitat, must have been warmer than previously thought, averaging approximately 90 °F (30 °C). The warmer climate of the Earth during the time of T. cerrejonensis allowed cold-blooded snakes to attain much larger sizes than modern snakes. Today, larger ectothermic animals are found in the tropics, where it is hottest, and smaller ones are found further from the equator.

World's Tallest Couple

With a combined height of more than 13ft, this is the world's tallest married couple.

But if Wilco Van Kleef-Bolton and his wife Keisha's two children keep growing they may end up with the world's tallest family title too.

Son Lucas, four, is already 3ft 11in - the height of a seven-year-old - and daughter Eva, two, is 3ft, the typical height of a three-year-old.

Being tall has had its up and downs for the Kleef-Boltons. When the couple first married - he's 7ft and she's 6ft 5in - they had some lofty ambitions, not least raising the doorframes in their home to stop them clipping their heads.

That issue is yet to be resolved and the couple still have a bedroom that is only big enough for a standard double bed, forcing them to sleep with their feet hanging out.

On the bright side, Mr Kleef-Bolton-29, says his height makes his work as a security guard at Barking and Dagenham College in Essex, significantly easier. 'Being this size and 18-and-a-half stone means it's no problem to pull two kids apart if they're fighting,' he said.

He also said students often compared him to England footballer Peter Crouch.

He said: 'If only I could play football like him. And with 40-ins legs like this I can get anywhere faster than anyone else.

'But of course I have to get my uniform custom-made. And finding a good pair of shoes that fit is really difficult.'

Dutch-born Mr Kleef-Bolton has to go to specialist websites that normally supply American basketball players to order the size 15 shoes he wears

His wife, 31, said her biggest problem was finding clothes large enough for her and her 38 in legs, even though she is a healthy size 12.

'I use normal women's dresses as shirts because they come up so short,' she said.

'But we both accepted our height years ago. There's not a lot you can do about it. Flying on budget airlines with no legroom is a problem too.

'And of course we get a lot of attention when we're out. But there are perks - I never have to use a stepladder to reach the top shelf.'

Mr Kleef-Bolton was referred to a specialist when he was ten and stood at 5ft 10in - the height of the average man in the UK. He was told he was naturally tall, rather than suffering from a medical condition.

He was started on hormone injections two years later because of concerns his knee joints might eventually give way under the weight of his body and he finally stopped growing aged 16.

His wife said she suffered from jokes at school about her height and had to stop wearing high heels when she was 18 and her shoe size went past an eight.

The Guinness World Record holders met when Mr Kleef-Bolton responded to her advert for a dance partner on a website for tall people, saying: 'I'm 7ft. Is that tall enough?'

Describing their wedding, he said: 'The staff at the register office agreed we were the perfect match.'

Mrs Kleef-Bolton, who had to wear men's clothing when she was pregnant because there weren't any maternity outfits big enough, said she and her husband would like to have more children.

'We think four is the ideal number but we think we can wait until these two are a bit bigger. Looking at them, it won't take that long,' she added.

World's Biggest Bowl Of Porridge

A new world record for the biggest bowl of porridge has been set at the annual Cupar Highland Games in Fife.

The huge breakfast of 690 litres of porridge which was cooked up could feed 2,000 people and was more than double the existing record.

Local firefighters added water from their fire engine to 80kg of oats, before the mixture was heated and cooked for several hours.

The record was confirmed by an official from Guinness World Records.

The attempt used a specially-made bowl measuring 1.5m in height and width, which was transported by a forklift truck for measuring.

According to the organisers of the attempt, the previous record was 300 litres.

Craig Manson, chairman of Cupar Round Table, which runs the Highland Games, said it had been a very exciting and ambitious challenge.

"We have achieved our goal of breaking the record and put Cupar back on the map," he added.

Official adjudicator Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records Book, added it was "unlikely" the new record would be broken soon.

The oats were provided by Scott's Porage Oats from their Cupar factory.

Pencil Carving Art | Pencil Tip Carvings

Pencil - only a tool used for painting, drawing, or putting down notes in the margins. In anyone - yes, but not at the Getty Dalton. This 45-year-old resident of Bridgeport for 25 years turns ordinary pencils into miniature sculptures, without using a magnifying glass

We have already talked once about the so-called "pencil carving, but in the case openwork patterns created from the wood of a pencil. Dalton Getty, on the contrary, the tree is not interested: material for his sculptures is a pencil. Among the works of the author can see the shoes, a church, a bust of Elvis. Not long ago, Dalton created a series of 26 sculptures, where the tip of each pencil, cut out the letter of the English alphabet

Dalton Getty works very slowly. He does not use any special tools: for he needed only a blade, a sewing needle and a very bright light. To protect their vision, the author works for one and half hours a day. One tiny sculpture may take several months, and the creation of the previously mentioned script in Dalton took 2,5 years. "When I tell people how long it takes me to create sculptures, they simply do not believe me, - says Getty. - My patience is simply amazing people, because nowadays everyone wants to be quicker, faster and faster.

By carving yet started to get involved in the age of 8 years. He tried to cut out pieces of the wooden part of a pencil, soap, chalk, but eventually stopped on the graphite. According to Dalton, is the perfect medium: it is soft and not as grainy as wood
Dalton believes that his sculptures are forcing people to stay at least for a few moments to escape from the mad rhythm of modern life and see the beauty in miniature detail
