Massive Solar Storm Causes Aurora Lights

Aurora Borealis in Wisconsin

Massive Solar Storm Causes Aurora Lights in United States and Canada As scientists have already warned us, huge solar storm hit Earth’s atmosphere today. A few of extraordinary massive eruptions of the plasma on Sun’s surface have reached Earth today and thanks to that increased solar activity, residents in some areas of North America were able to see aurora lights in the sky.

NASA has announced that there were four strong eruptions on Sun which were directed straight to Earth. Luckily, our atmosphere as well as magnetic field has played well its role and absorbed the radiation.

Scientists have been predicting for a while that solar storms like this one could cause significant damage to satellites. Scientists are predicting that increased solar activity in next few years will be followed with a number of similar solar storms.

New Chef has Stomach for the Job

A Chinese restaurant recruited a new chef by inviting applicants to slice a melon on a woman's stomach.

The hotel restaurant, in Hankou, Hubei province, put the knife skills of more than 15 candidates to the test.

A woman volunteer laid on a table, with her stomach covered with a thin sheet of plastic, while would-be chefs chopped up their melons.

"They had to chop the gourd into very thin pieces in a limited time," said a spokesman for the hotel.

The successful candidate, Chef Hu Gua, won the job by choping up his melon in less than a minute without hurting the woman.

Chef Hu told the Changjiang Business Daily that he had been very confident before the recruitment test.

But he added: "I still felt a bit nervous when it came to is as it was the first time I ever chopped up something on a woman's belly."

One of the judges commented: "Hu did such a god job - you could tell he had been in the trade for more than 10 years."

Elephant Injured Treated By Veterinarian

Mae Ka Pae, Elephant Injured By Land Mine, Treated By Vets

Veterinarians were treating the latest land mine victim from the Thai-Myanmar border Thursday, a 22-year-old female elephant whose foot was severely wounded by the explosion.

Mae Ka Pae, as she is called, is the 13th mine casualty to be treated at the innovative Friends of Asian Elephant hospital near this city in northern Thailand since it began operating in 1993. She arrived at the facility Wednesday evening, a week after the accident, which shredded the sole of her left rear foot.

"We have to monitor her condition for 48 hours now that we cleaned the wound and injected pain killers. We will give her a tetanus shot later today. Overall, she is a good condition. She is obedient and can eat normally," said Dr. Preecha Phuangkam, a veterinarian and the hospital director.

The elephant was injured at the frontier, which is strewn with land mines from fighting between the Myanmar government and ethnic minority rebels. Preecha said her handlers might have let her wander to the less-developed Myanmar side of the border to find food.

She joins two other elephants, Motala and Mosha, who remain hospitalized but have recovered well enough to wear prosthetic legs. Mosha became the world's first elephant with an artificial leg, attached in 2007.

Traditionally the truck, taxi and logging worker of Thailand, the elephant has lost most of its jobs to modernization. However, the tourism industry still employs large numbers of elephants for trekking and other activities. Some, including a number along the Myanmar border, are still used in illegal logging operations.
