An iceberg is a large piece of ice from freshwater that has broken off from a snow-formed glacier or ice shelf and is floating in open water. It may subsequently become frozen into pack ice. Alternatively, it may come to rest on the seabed in shallower water, causing ice scour (also known as ice gouging) or becoming an ice island.

Because the density of pure ice is about 920 kg/m³, and that of sea water about 1025 kg/m³, typically only one-ninth of the volume of an iceberg is above water. The shape of the underwater portion can be difficult to judge by looking at the portion above the surface. This has led to the expression "tip of the iceberg", for a problem or difficulty that is only a small manifestation of a larger problem.

Icebergs generally range from 1 to 75 metres (3–250 ft) above sea level and weigh 100,000 to 200 000 tons. The tallest known iceberg in the North Atlantic was 168 metres (550 ft) above sea level, reported by the USCG icebreaker East Wind in 1958, making it the height of a 55-story building. These icebergs originate from the glaciers of western Greenland, and may have an interior temperature of -15 to -20°C (5 to -4 °F).

Though usually confined by winds and currents to move close to the coast, the largest icebergs recorded have been calved, or broken off, from the Ross Ice Shelf of Antarctica. Iceberg B-15, photographed by satellite in 2000, measured 295 km long and 37 km wide (183-23 mi), with a surface area of 11,000 km² (4,250 mi²). The mass was estimated around three billion tonnes. The largest iceberg on record was an Antarctic tabular iceberg of over 12,000 sq mi (208 miles long and 60 miles (97 km) wide) sighted 150 miles (240 km) west of Scott Island, in the South Pacific Ocean, by the USS Glacier on November 12, 1956. This iceberg was larger than Belgium.

When an iceberg melts, it makes a fizzing sound called "Bergie Seltzer". This sound is made when compressed air bubbles trapped in the iceberg pop. The bubbles come from air trapped in snow layers that later became glacial ice.

Ice campers who camp on top of flat or hollowed icebergs are known as icebergers.

The word "iceberg" is a partial loan translation from Dutch ijsberg, literally meaning ice mountain, cognate to Danish Isbjerg, German Eisberg, Low Saxon Iesbarg and Swedish/Norwegian Isberg.

Wills And Kate Royal Wedding Condoms Go On Sale

A condom manufacturer has announced it will a special range of prophylactics to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Which is nice.

The protection - which comes with the slogan "Lie back and think of England" - are due to go on sale ahead of the April 29th wedding.

Makers say the condoms are a unique way to remember the royal wedding, adding that they 'combine the strength of a Prince with the yielding sensitivity of a Princess-to-Be.'

Each pack of three condoms comes with a leaflet including a photo of the happy couple (not like that) and is presented in a 'timeless souvenir heirloom collector’s box'.
Speaking of the bizarre commemorative gift, Hugh Pomfret from Crown Jewels Condoms of Distinction, added: "Crown Jewels Royal Wedding Souvenir prophylactics are a unique way to remember this great British occasion.

"All at Crown Jewels have worked tirelessly to craft these heirloom quality love sheaths. In years to come, they will be a timeless memento of a magical wedding day."

Michael Schumacher Given An Island By Dubai Prince

Michael Schumacher received an unique and unprecedented parting gift after his last Grand Prix in Brazil -- an island.
Dubai's crown prince - Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum - reportedly decided to give the retiring German a piece of the man-made island paradise 'The World', located off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.

'The World' is 300 islands clustered together in a nine kilometre zone to resemble Earth from an aerial photo.

Schumacher's island, apparently part of 'Antarctica' on the artificial globe, is worth about (US) $7 million.

Schumacher's manager Willi Weber confirmed: "In a couple of years it will be finished. Then Michael and Corinna will have their own holiday island!

Statues of Beautiful Penitents of Taxco, Mexico

In many countries especially those with past Spanish links, some Roman Catholic believers still follow the old medieval practice of painful and bloody self-penitence to atone for their sins. The town of Taxco, Mexico is perhaps the most famous for this ritual which takes place every year during the Easter week, where the repenting sinners known as "Penitentes" walk through cobbled winding streets of the old town.
The Penitentes always wear black dress and their head is also fully covered with black hood with small openings for eyes. The Penitentes are further categorised by the method of penance.
"Penitentes Flagelante" are those who walk the route shirtless and carry a large, heavy wooden cross in their arms. They carry a rosary and a whip with thorny metallic end in their hands. They frequently stop during the procession, give the heavy cross to attendees who accompany them and then flagellate (whip) their backs. This is repeated every night during Holy Week reopening the wounds of the earlier day.
"Penitentes Encruzado" are those who instead of the cross, carry a heavy bundle (40-50 kg.) of thorned blackberry canes which is tied across their bare back and outstretched arms. They are also helped by attendees who occasionally give support to the thorny bundle when the procession is not moving.
"Animas Penitentes" wear full black dress covering their whole body and also cover their head with hood. They have heavy chains attached to their ankles and walk in stooped bent posture carrying small crosses or lighted candles. As they always face the ground, these penitentes have attendants who guide them during the procession. When the procession stops, they are allowed to rest only by going down on hands and knees.
This is the only category in which women also take part.
To honour the Repenting Sinners, three statues, representing each category of the penitentes, have been installed behind the oldest monastery in the town - The ex-monastery of San Bernardino de Siena, constructed at the end of the 16th century.

Scrabble, the board game loved by word enthusiasts around the world, not only provides hours of entertainment, but also the raw material for some cool arts and crafts projects.

Whether it’s the Scrabble tiles or the game board, there are many ways in which a Scrabble set can be reused other than to draft a ransom note. We’ve picked 10 of the best.
10) Scrabble coasters
coasters Ten Creative Ways to Recycle Scrabble Tiles
If you have a whole bunch of old Scrabble tiles, why not glue them together and turn them into coasters? Apparently, they’re selling like hot cakes in stores already. We love the picture caption on Flickr relating to the photograph above: “You only need three things in life: money, Girl Scout cookies and Scrabble coasters.” Yup, that sounds about right.
9) Scrabble cuff links
cufflinks Ten Creative Ways to Recycle Scrabble Tiles
Check out these stylish cuff links. The tiles are a perfect and discreet fashion statement that goes with even the most conservative of business suits. And they can, if desired, even carry the wearer’s initials on his sleeve, or a world map recycled from an old history book, as seen in the image above.

For more playful managers, there’s always the gnome option seen above.
8) Scrabble tile pendant

From cuff links, it’s only a small step to pendants. Yes, though almost too pretty to cover up, Scrabble tiles make a great background for pendants. The small wood base is just the perfect size and, covered with any pattern or material, makes for a great pendant.

Above are a whole variety of them — and you can’t miss the creative use of the Scrabble board as a stand!
7) Scrabble clock

If you don’t want to miss your next Scrabble tournament, keep track of the time with this Scrabble board clock. Just use an old Scrabble board, turn some of the tiles into numbers, from one to 12, and add the hands. Done! Your mind will be on Scrabble all the time, guaranteed.
6) Scrabble earrings

5) Scrabble bookmarks

These bookmarks made of recycled Scrabble tiles will surely inspire you to read more, and not losing track of the page you left always helps. The secret of the tile’s glass-like appearance? Flickr user and bookmark creator Kate admits: “It’s Diamond Glaze.”
4) Scrabble tile wine charms

Around the world and over the years, Scrabble tiles have varied greatly in size and color. These transparent red ones make for a charming wine evening without guests losing sight of their glasses. Very practical.
3) Scrabble art

Canadian artist Clare Graham uses hundreds, if not thousands, of Scrabble tiles and assembles them into sculptures that look like Scrabble skyscrapers. Though the letters are strung together randomly, who knows, there may be a hidden message in all the gibberish.

The fact that reusing old materials can result in beautiful artworks definitely comes out loud and clear.
2) Scrabble keyboard

Sick and tired of the old plastic QWERTY keyboard? Why not personalize it with Scrabble tiles? The wooden letters not only give any computer keyboard a classy look, but also a vintage one.

Remember way back in the ’60s when the first computers came to life? Maybe keyboards looked like this one in those days.
1) Scrabble portrait

Our favorite is Frankenscrabble, a portrait of Frankenstein’s monster recreated in Scrabble tiles. It’s amazing what depth only a few shades of brown can give an image. And, surprisingly, the letters do not distract from the subject, but add to the charm of the artwork. Very ingenious! This particular piece was on display at the Lucky JuJu Pinball Gallery in Alameda, CA, in October 2009.
Bonus entry: Scrabble fridge magnets

This idea is almost too simple to be true: Scrabble fridge magnets! Just glue a magnet to each Scrabble tile and get some really cool fridge magnet letters that provide a myriad of opportunities to spell out your mood or simply leave a message for a housemate. Brilliant!
As these examples have shown, there is really no limit when getting creative with a game of Scrabble — and we don’t mean by inventing words. If you reuse the tiles or the board, Scrabble makes for a great pastime, even on the arts and crafts front!
